The Stone Roses are one of the most celebrated Manchester bands. Formed in 1983, the band went on to enjoy success throughout the late 80’s and early 90’s. Their most prominent line up consisted of Ian Brown on vocals, John Squire on guitar, bassist Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield and drummer Alan ‘Reni’ Wren.

Ian Brown and John Squire met at Altrincham Grammar School, they initially formed a band called The Patrol with Ian Brown on bass. The band was short lived but paved the way for the birth of The Stone Roses.

The Stone Roses first single, the double A side So Young / Tell Me was recorded at Strawberry Studios in Stockport in 1985. This release was followed by Sally Cinnamon in 1987 which brought a more melodic groove to their sound.

In 1989, the band released their self titled debut album to great acclaim. The single Fools Gold reached number 8 in the charts and won an NME award for Single of the Year. The Stone Roses also won 3 other NME awards that year, including Band of the Year and Best New Band.

Many singles followed after the success of Fool’s Gold. Made of Stone reached number 20 in 1990. Elephant Stone and One Love were also released in 1990, with the latter reaching number 4. I Wanna Be Adored, Waterfall, and I Am the Resurrection followed, each entering the top 40.

In 1994, The Stone Roses released their second album Second Coming. This reached number 4 in the charts but the band’s popularity soon started to dwindle and in 1996, John Squire quit the band. A final gig at Reading Festival later that year marked the end of the road for the Stone Roses. John Squire went on the form the Seahorses, bassist Mani joined Primal Scream and Ian Brown embarked on a solo career.

The band reunited in 2012 for an unexpected word tour, which included three sold out shows in Manchester’s Heaton Park.
