In 1970s, History, Manchester, News

Maine Road was home to Manchester City Football Club from 1923 to 2003. Thousands of fans flocked to the Moss Side stadium over the years to see Manchester City play against their rival teams. From periods of triumph to difficult times in the late 90s, Manchester City fans have certainly had their fair share of ups and downs.

One of the most successful eras for Manchester City was during the late 60s, early 70s. This point in time is often referred to as ‘the glory years’ because of the number of trophies the team won.

In 1969, City won the FA Cup, followed by the Football League Cup in 1970. They were also the winners of the European Cup Winners Cup that same year. Franny Lee scored the only goal of the game with a penalty. In 1972 they won the FA Charity Shield and in 1976 they were victorious in winning the Football League Cup.

Memorable players from the 70s include Dennis Tueart who scored a legendary overhead kick in the 1976 league cup final, Tony Book, team captain and manager during the 70s, Mike Doyle, Francis Lee, Mike Summerbee, Colin Bell and Denis Law who scored with a back heel against Manchester United in 1974.

A new North Stand was constructed in the early 70s which replaced the open terrace. Maine Road was demolished in 2004 after Manchester City moved to The City of Manchester Stadium. Although the Maine Road stadium no longer stands, it will always be remembered fondly by Manchester City and their fans.
