Ocean Software was founded in Manchester in 1983. The company headquarters were located on Central Street in Manchester City Centre. Originally named Spectrum Software, the initial name caused some confusion due to the similarly named ZX Spectrum. As a result of this, Spectrum Software became Ocean Software. Their first releases included, Digger Dan, High Noon, Moo Alert, Gilligan’s Gold and The Hunchback.

In 1985, Ocean Software began developing TV and Movie licensed games, most notably, Rambo, Short Circuit, Miami Vice and RoboCop. Ocean software went on to become one of the biggest game developers during the late 1980’s and 90’s. Further releases included, Batman, Rambo II and The Addams Family.

Ocean developed games for many different systems, including the ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, Atari ST and Amiga as well as video game consoles such as the Nintendo Entertainment System, Sega Master System, Sega Mega Drive and Sony PlayStation.

Ocean Software is often remembered for it’s development of the Ocean Loader. The ocean loader solved the issue of the long waiting time whilst a game was loading by displaying an image on the screen with music playing in the background.

In 1996, Ocean Software was purchased by the French company Infogrames and was later renamed to Infogrames UK. In 2004 Infogrames became Atari UK and subsequently became Atari Inc in 2009. Atari Inc is still producing games to this day.

Ocean Software is well known for it’s Manchester roots with many of it’s most popular games being produced in the city.
