July 10: Manchester United and England footballer Bobby Charlton jokingly squares up to boxing legends Frank Bruno, left, and Henry Cooper in London.

The sporting greats came together at a reception to mark the Queen’s 66th birthday.

Both heavyweights were renowned for packing a punch.

Cooper was famous for his left hook, known as ‘Enry’s ‘Ammer, which floored Muhammad Ali when the pair fought in 1963. Ali was saved by the bell signalling the end of the round.

Former WBC world champion Bruno won 38 of his 45 bouts by knockout.

 

1973

July 10: Lancashire cricketer Jack Simmons celebrates a successful first season as captain of the Tasmania state side.

Simmons took the team from playing matches against touring sides back into the first-class Sheffield Shield competition in his six seasons at the helm.

A right-arm off-break bowler and middle-order batsman, Simmons played a major role in Lancashire winning the Gillette Cup three years in a row from 1970 to 1972.

1966

July 13: Portuguese soccer star Eusebio beats the Bulgarian defence during his country’s 3-1 victory in a World Cup group match at Old Trafford.

Eusebio ended up as the tournament’s top scorer with nine goals.

Portugal went out to eventual winners England in the semi-finals. Eusebio converted a penalty in the 82nd minute, but it was not enough to overtake England’s two goals scored by Bobby Charlton.

Eusebio was selected for FIFA’s All-Star team of the tournament, along with England players Charlton, George Cohen, Gordon Banks and Bobby Moore.
