June 23, 1991:

Croation Goran Ivanisevic wins the Manchester Open tennis tournament after beating Pete Sampras in the final 6-4, 6-4.

The annual grass-court tournament, held at the Northern Lawn Tennis Club in Didsbury, was first played in 1880.

It was part of the Grand Prix circuit from 1970 to 1989 and part of the AP Tour from 1990 to 1994. Sampras won his first grass court title at the Manchester Open in 1990.

Other winners have included Jimmy Connors, Tom Okker, John McEnroe and Stefan Edberg.

The tournament was abolished in 2009.

June 19, 1969:

Manchester City winger Mike Summerbee is put through his paces by ex-Great Britain middle distance runner Stan Taylor at Longford Park athletics track.

Checking Summerbee’s time is trainer Joe Lancaster, a former athlete who designed City’s demanding fitness regime of the 1960s and 1970s.

Although initially unpopular, players eventually regarded the programme as being a major factor in the club winning a number of trophies.

June 20, 1963:

A touch of Ascot elegance comes to Manchester as staff at the Demmy betting shop dress up in style for the Royal race meeting.

The men wore top hat and tails while the women donned cocktail dresses and splendid hats at the Oxford Road shop.

We’re not sure what the punters thought, but it’s odds on they were more than a little surprised by the new dress code!

As far as the racing was concerned, the 1963 Gold Cup at Ascot was won by Twilight Alley ridden by Lester Piggott.
