Horse-drawn carriages were the norm when this photograph was taken in 1891. The picture is Stevenson Square looking towards Newton Street and Piccadilly.

The photographer has captured the square in a relatively-quiet moment compared to the normal hustle and bustle of life you would expect in the city. Fifty years earlier the scene was not so peaceful as history books reported “a battle took place in Stevenson’s Square between the Anti-Corn Law Leaguers and the Chartists, and several heads were broken.”

The square also witnessed demonstrations by unemployed men during the General Strike in 1926.
