Welcome to Then and Now, where each week we compare images of Manchester streets, landmarks, buildings and events from bygone days with today.

Our main image this week shows Manchester United winger George Best looking very dapper at Ringway Airport in February 1968.

The Northern Ireland international and fashion trendsetter had every reason to be happy as he’d just landed a clothes modelling contract to complement his football earnings.

The 1967-68 football season was proving to be a milestone for Best. He was scoring freely in the league and United were sweeping all before them in the European Cup.

Best ended up top scorer for the season with 32 goals in all competitions and was voted European Footballer of the Year and the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year.

George Best
The Manchester United team
The Red Devils became the first English team to win the European Cup, beating Benfica 4-1 after extra time at Wembley. Best scored United’s second goal in the 92nd minute.

Best made his first team debut for the Red Devils against West Bromwich Albion in September 1963 at the age of 17.

He went on to make 361 league appearances for the club, scoring 137 goals, before leaving in 1974. Best also won 37 senior caps for Northern Ireland from 1966 to 1977, scoring nine goals.

Our modern image shows another smartly dressed set of United players at Manchester Airport in August 2015. Wayne Rooney is in the foreground.

They were flying out to play Club Brugge in the preliminary round of the UEFA Champions League. United won the two-leg match 7-1 on aggregate.
