Welcome again to Then and Now, where each week we compare images of Merseyside landmarks, buildings, streets and events from bygone days with how they look today.

Our main image this week shows Liverpool in action against Manchester City during a close-fought First Division match at Anfield in January 1953.

Liverpool’s Scottish winger Billy Liddell can be seen crashing through a tangle between Reds’ attacker Kevin Baron and City defender Ken Branagan to fire in a header at goal from a cross by Laurie Hughes.

The attempt was unsuccessful as City won the match 1-0 thanks to a goal from inside forward Johnny Hart.

Liddell went on to be Liverpool’s top scorer for the season with 13 goals in all competitions. The Reds, under manager Don Welsh, finished the league in 17th position with 36 points.

City, under Les McDowall, finished in 20th spot with 35 points, narrowly avoiding relegation. Hart was the Blues’ top scorer with 13 goals.

Fast forward 65 years to January 2018 and Liverpool are again taking on City at Anfield – this time in the Premier League. Our photo shows manager Jurgen Klopp celebrating with Andy Robertson and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain at the final whistle.

He had every reason to be happy as the result was a pulsating 4-3 win for Liverpool with goals from Oxlade-Chamberlain, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah.

Liverpool ended the campaign in fourth place with 75 points. Top scorer was Salah with 44 goals in all competitions.

It was one of City’s rare reverses in a blistering season which saw them become league champions with a record 100 points.
