Princess Diana steps ashore from the aptly named narrow boat with Prince William during her visit to Altrincham.
Well-wishers gave her a rapturous welcome to the town, which she toured as part of an official visit to the North West. The Princess of Wales also visited Manchester Royal Infirmary.
Five months later, in December 1992, Prime Minister John Major announced the amicable separation of the Prince and Princess of Wales to the House of Commons.
June 3, 1988:
Players from American football team the Manchester Heroes go through their paces against the Scunthorpe Steelers at a gala event.
The Heroes were one of three clubs active in Manchester in the late 1980s – the others were the Spartans and the Allstars.
All three clubs stopped playing in the 1990s, but American football was revived when the Manchester Titans were formed in 2003. The team consisted of local players who’d been travelling out of Manchester to appear for other sides.
June 5, 1973:
Film and TV actress Joanna Lumley poses for the press before making her debut in the Granada TV soap Coronation Street.
She played Ken Barlow’s girlfriend Elaine Perkins, the daughter of Bessie Street School head-teacher Wilfred Perkins, for eight episodes in 1973. Elaine was visiting Weatherfield from London when she met Ken.
Lumley achieved national fame for her TV roles in the New Avengers, Sapphire and Steel and Absolutely Fabulous. She also appeared in the 1969 James Bond film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.
