November 10, 1994:
Manchester United winger Andrei Kanchelskis volleys a shot at goal during his team’s 5-0 victory over Manchester City at Old Trafford.
Kanchelskis was on fire that day, scoring a hat-trick in the Premier League local Derby. Trying to close the flying Russian down is City defender Terry Phelan.
The other scorers on the day were Eric Cantona and Mark Hughes.
Kanchelskis played 123 league matches for United from 1991 to 1995 after signing from Shakhtar Donetsk for £650,000. He scored 28 league goals.
November 11, 1988:
Duran Duran lead singer Simon Le Bon belts out a number as the band play Manchester on their Big Live Thing tour.
The group gave a number of ‘secret club’ shows in late 1988 – and this photo is believed to have come from their appearance at the International II club in Plymouth Grove.
Duran Duran were at the height of their fame from 1983 to 1985. They were even labelled the ‘Fab Five’ in deference to the Beatles’ nickname of the Fab Four.
November 16, 1996:
Coronation Street writers Harry Driver and Vince Powell discuss details of a script before a run-through with the cast at Granada studios.
Driver, born in Blackley, helped write 58 episodes of Coronation Street from 1961 to 1973 and also worked on the TV programmes Nearest and Dearest, Bless This House and Love Thy Neighbour.
Early in his career he formed a comedy double act with Powell, who was born in Miles Platling. Powell co-wrote 18 episodes of Coronation Street and collaborated with Driver on a number of projects, including For the Love of Ada and Never Mind the Quality, Feel the Width.
