July 7, 2001:

Coronation Street actor Bill Tarmey, who played Jack Duckworth on the Granada soap from 1981 to 2010, relaxes after the launch of his new album In My Life.

Born in Ardwick, Tarmey was an established nightclub singer as well as an actor. His first album, A Gift of Love, went to No. 15 in the UK charts in 1993.

Tarmey formed one of Coronation Street’s favourite couples with Liz Dawn who played Jack’s long-suffering wife Vera. Their wayward son Terry was portrayed by Manchester actor Nigel Pivaro.

July 10, 1998:

Manchester United striker Andy Cole gets down to some serious pre-season training at the Cliff under the watchful eye of manager Alex Ferguson.

The hard work certainly paid off as the Red Devils finished the season with the Champions League and Premier League titles under their belt as well as the FA Cup – a unique treble.

Cole made 195 league appearances for United from 1995 to 2001, scoring 93 goals. He signed from Newcastle United in a deal worth £7 million, setting a new record for a British transfer.

July 10, 1966:

Brazilian football legend Pele is captured in a pensive moment during training at Bolton for the 1966 World Cup tournament.

World champions Brazil went out in the group stages after losing to Portugal and Hungary.

Pele won three World Cups with Brazil, scoring 77 goals in 92 games for the national team. He scored no less than 643 goals in 659 games for his club Santos.
