December 7, 1995:
Music legend David Bowie enthrals fans at Manchester’s NYNEX Arena as part of his Outside album tour.
Manchester singer-songwriter Morrissey was the support act for European leg of the tour, but withdrew after nine dates. Bowie performed with the band Nine Inch Nails in the USA.
Outside was Bowie’s 19th studio album and was recorded with former collaborator Brian Eno on keyboards. It included the single Hallo Spaceboy, later remixed by the Pet Shop Boys.
December 11, 1970:
Pupils of Ross Place School, Ardwick, have to cross a sea of mud to reach their main school building after heavy winter rain.
An umbrella is still up in the background, but the boys don’t seem to mind the downpour. We’re not sure what their parents will make of their muddy clothes when they get home!
Snow was on the way. Many parts of the UK enjoyed a white Christmas in 1970 as high pressure between Scotland and Iceland brought snow showers on the back of a cold easterly front.
December 11, 1982:
Manchester United striker Frank Stapleton evades the Notts County defence during the First Division clash between the two clubs at Old Trafford.
United, playing under manager Ron Atkinson, won the match 4-0 with goals from Norman Whiteside, Bryan Robson, Mike Duxbury and Stapleton himself.
It proved to be a good season for Republic of Ireland international Stapleton as he was United’s top scorer with 19 goals in all competitions.
