October 1, 1995:
Imperious Manchester United midfielder Eric Cantona slots home a penalty with panache during the Red Devils’ 2-2 draw with Liverpool at Old Trafford.
Cantona set the Premier League crowd alight when he levelled the match after Robbie Fowler had netted twice for Liverpool and Nicky Butt had scored for United.
The Red Devils went on to win the league title with 82 points while Liverpool were third with 71. Cantona was United’s top scorer for the season with 19 goals in all competitions.
October 4, 1978:
Stage and screen star Vanessa Redgrave strikes a pose at Manchester’s Royal Exchange Theatre while rehearsing for Henrik Ibsen’s play The Lady From The Sea.
Redgrave found fame playing Guinevere in the 1967 musical Camelot and also starred in A Man For All Seasons in 1967 and Mary Queen of Scots in 1971.
Her accolades include an Academy Award, two Golden Globe Awards, two Primetime Emmy Awards and two Screen Actors Guild Awards.
October 7, 1928:
Manchester United half-back Frank Barson takes a break from training in his sweater – the preferred work-out attire for the 1920s.
Tough-tackling Barson made 140 league appearances for the Red Devils from 1922 to 1928, scoring four goals. He also played for Wigan Borough, Aston Villa and Watford.
Barson helped United win promotion in 1925 and was given a public house in Manchester as a result. But he hated attention so much that he gave the pub to its head waiter on the opening night!
