This Week – Christiano Ronaldo Celebrates
APRIL 13TH 1951
Long-serving hangman Albert Pierrepoint pulls a pint at his Manchester pub, the Help the Poor Struggler.
Pierrepoint executed at least 400 people, including Ruth Ellis, Derek Bentley and the war-time traitor William Joyce (Lord Haw Haw).
He hanged more than 200 people convicted of war crimes in Germany and Austria.
He executed Timothy Evans for a crime committed by his neighbour John Christie, who was also hanged by Pierrepoint.
APRIL 13TH 1956
Alberto Semprini, one of the most popular entertainers of the 1950s, is in Manchester to give a piano recital at the Free Trade Hall.
Semprini hosted his own light music radio programme – the Semprini Serenade – for 25 years. It was always introduced with the words: ‘Old ones, new ones, loved ones, neglected ones.’
He also wrote a number of light music compositions, including Mediterranean Concerto which became the theme tune for his radio show.
APRIL 13TH 1962
Tensing the kitten, presumably named because he liked high places, perches on a rail at the elephant enclosure at Belle Vue Zoo.
Watching the kitten intently are the two young Asian elephants Moti and Kali.
The first elephant at the zoo came from Ceylon after being purchased by the Jennison family in 1860.
APRIL 12TH 1975
Manchester City players crowd round Asa Hartford as he scores the only goal in the 1-0 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Pictured at the First Division match are Willie Donachie, Hartford, Mike Doyle, Colin Bell and Rodney Marsh.
City finished the season in 8th place with 46 points. Bell was top scorer with 18 goals.
Chelsea fared less well. They were relegated along with Luton Town and Carlisle United after finishing 21st with 33 points.
APRIL 12TH 1983
Coronation Street actor Fred Feast, who played Rovers barman Fred Gee, watches in anguish as his car rolls into the lake at Tatton Park with Bet Lynch (Julie Goodyear) and Betty Turpin (Betty Driver) still inside.
Fred planned to impress barmaid Bet with a drive out in his Rover 2000, but things went badly wrong when the hapless potman left the handbrake off.
It went from bad to worse when Fred carried Bet back to dry land and promptly dumped her in a cowpat!
APRIL 10TH 2007
Christiano Ronaldo celebrates with team-mate Alan smith after scoring his second goal in United’s 7-1 victory over AS Roma at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils won the Champions League quarter final 8-3 on aggregate after a 2-1 defeat in the Italian capital.
United’s scorers at Old Trafford were Ronaldo, Smith, Michael Carrick (2), Wayne Rooney and Patrice Evra. Roma’s reply came from Daniele de Rossi.
United went out in the semi-final 5-3 on aggregate to eventual winners AC Milan.
