December 1st 1985:
Two Coronation Street stalwarts, Eileen Derbyshire and Betty Driver, attend a party to mark the Granada soap’s 25th anniversary.
Derbyshire, born in Urmston, played Emily Bishop for 55 years from January 1960 to January 2015, making her the longest-serving cast member in a British TV drama series.
Driver portrayed Rovers Return barmaid Betty Turpin for 42 years from 1969 to 2011. She also appeared opposite Arthur Lowe in the Street spin-off Pardon the Expression from 1965-6.
Betty’s legendary hotpots were the talk of the Rovers, with the recipe jealously guarded for decades!
December 9th 1995:
Manchester United centre half Steve Bruce keeps a close eye on Sheffield Wednesday striker Mark Bright during the Premier League match between the two clubs at Old Trafford.
The game ended in a 2-2 draw with Eric Cantona scoring both United goals. Bright himself scored for Wednesday along with Guy Whittingham.
Bruce made 309 league appearances for the Red Devils from 1987 to 1996, forming a formidable defensive partnership with Gary Pallister. He also scored 36 league goals for the club.
December 2nd 1976:
Sex Pistols’ manager Malcolm McLaren faces the press after expletives were aired during the band’s interview with Manchester broadcaster Bill Grundy on ITV’s Today programme.
The interview is said to have elevated the Sex Pistols to notoriety as well as signalling the arrival of mainstream punk.
As well as presenting the Today show, Grundy was a newsreader for Granada TV and wrote a regular column for Punch magazine.
