December 20, 1992:
A tense love triangle was developing in Coronation Street as teacher Ken Barlow (William Roache) was getting close to florist Maggie Redman (Jill Kerman), the former girlfriend of factory owner Mike Baldwin (Johnny Briggs).
Maggie and Mike’s son Mark was beginning to accept Ken, but Mike had other ideas. While Ken was planning a family outing to Brittany, Mike waded in with a trip to Euro Disney. There was no contest!
Kerman played Maggie for 12 years from 1982 to 1994. She was already well known on TV for her long-running role of Penny Wheeler, fiancée of teacher Bernard Hedges (John Alderton) in Please Sir.
December 18 1969:
Father Christmas spreads a little festive cheer at Lewis’s department store on Market Street by dancing with mums who’d brought their children to Santa’s grotto.
The Lewis’s store in Manchester, the second in the country, was opened in 1877 after the group was founded in Liverpool in 1856.
The Manchester store included a ballroom on the fifth floor, which was also used for exhibitions.
The first Santa’s grotto took place in the Liverpool store in 1879. It was called ‘The Christmas Fairyland.’
December 23, 1953:
Actor Ben Warriss, left, lines up with comedian Jimmy Jewel as the panto dame in the Palace Theatre production of Puss in Boots.
Warriss and Jewel were actually first cousins and were brought up in the same household before becoming a comedy double act in 1934.
The duo notched up 12 Blackpool summer seasons and made seven appearances at the Royal Variety Show. They even had their own radio programme called Up the Pole.
