December 3rd 1986:
As Coronation Street approaches its 60th birthday, here’s a flashback photo of local actors Sean Wilson and Sally Ann Matthews when both were fresh faces on the Granada-produced soap.
Wilson, from Ashton-under-Lyne, played Martin Platt from 1985 to 2005, returning briefly in 2018. He was the husband of Gail and father of David Platt, portrayed by Jack P. Shepherd.
Oldham-born Matthews played Martin’s one-time girlfriend Jenny Bradley from 1986 to 1991, returning full time to the programme in 2015. She is still a regular character today.
November 29th 1969:
Manchester City weather the storm of another Leeds United attack during their First Division match against the Yorkshire team at Maine Road.
Leeds’ centre-half Jack Charlton has been thwarted by Blues’ goalkeeper Ken Mulhearn. City players Colin Bell, Tony Book and Tommy Booth anxiously look on.
Leeds went on to win the match 2-1 with goals from Mick Jones and Eddie Gray. City’s reply came from Francis Lee.
The Blues finished 10th in the league on 43 points, but won both the League Cup and the European Cup Winner’s Cup.
November 28th 1968:
Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, learns the intricacies of a rotary vacuum filter during a visit to the University of Salford’s chemical engineering department.
Explaining the mysteries of the mechanism is fourth-year student Robert Archibald.
Prince Philip was Salford’s first chancellor from February 1967 until 1991 – and still takes a keen interest in the university’s activities.
