December 6, 1995:
David Bowie captivates the audience at Manchester’s NYNEX Arena during his Outside Tour of the USA and UK.
The American leg of the tour started in Hartford, Connecticut, and played 25 venues before finishing at the Hollywood Palladium.
Bowie gave two concerts at the NYNEX on December 6th and 8th during the UK segment of the tour. Manchester artist Morrissey was Bowie’s support act in the UK until he quit just before the Aberdeen Exhibition Centre concert on November 29th.
Bowie’s set list included the songs The Man Who Sold the World, Breaking Glass and Moonage Daydream.
December 1, 1985:
Coronation Street stars Eileen Derbyshire and Betty Driver celebrate the coming of Christmas at a cast party.
Derbyshire played Emily Bishop from January 1961 to January 2016, notching up an unmatched 55 years on screen. She made a brief cameo return in October 2019 for Ken Barlow’s 80th birthday party.
Driver portrayed barmaid Betty Turpin from June 1969 to May 2011 after first auditioning for the part of Hilda Ogden. Her hotpot remains a dish of legend in the Rovers’ Return – and the recipe is jealously guarded!
December 4, 1982:
Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Corrigan punches the ball clear during the First Division match against Arsenal at Maine Road.
City went on to win the game 2-1 with both goals coming from defender Tommy Caton.
It was to prove an unhappy season for the Blues. City were relegated after finishing third from bottom in 20th position with 47 points.
