Bargain hunters keen to take advantage of post-Christmas sales wait patiently outside Debenhams department store in Manchester.

To avoid a mad scramble, store staff handed cards to shoppers entitling them to buy what they had queued for when the doors opened.

The Debenhams store group first started trading in London in 1778 under the name of William Clark. William Debenham became a partner in 1813.

January 3, 1993:

Second Division Bolton Wanderers take on mighty Liverpool in a Third Round FA Cup tie at Burnden Park. Ian Rush has just gone close for the visitors with the ball being cleared off the line.

The hard-fought match ended in a 2-2 draw with Bolton’s goals coming from Mark Seagraves and John McGinlay. On the scoresheet for Liverpool were Rush and Mark Winstanley.

Bolton caused a major cup upset by winning the replay at Anfield 2-0 with goals from McGinlay and Andy Walker. The Trotters beat Wolves 2-0 in the next round but then went out 3-1 away to Derby County.

December 21, 1967:

Singer and entertainer Des O’Connor is taken aback by the sudden appearance of the Fairy Godmother in Cinderella at the Palace Theatre.

O’Connor, still in bedclothes, played Buttons in the popular panto while Eileen Dell was Cinderella’s fairy guardian. The pumpkin had yet to be transformed into a coach.

The production starred singer Vince Hill as the Prince and Pippa Steel as Cinderella. It also featured appearances by Tanya the baby elephant!
