April 17, 1971:

Manchester United attacker Denis Law fires in a shot during the First Division match against Crystal Palace at Old Trafford.
Law scored a hat-trick in United’s 5-3 victory with the other two goals coming from George Best.
The Red Devils were recovering their league form after the departure of first team manager Wilf McGuinness in December.
Club legend and former manager Sir Matt Busby came out of retirement to lead the team to an eighth-place finish in the First Division. Best was the season’s top scorer with 21 goals.

April 16, 1968:

Coronation Street actress Pat Phoenix poses at home with her collection of fur coats.
Phoenix played the redoubtable Elsie Tanner on the Granada TV soap from its launch in 1960 to 1984, becoming one of its most familiar characters.
Described as ‘the siren of the Street’ in the 1960s, Elsie endured a string of doomed relationships.
She married American serviceman Steve Tanner in 1967 and Alan Howard, played by Alan Browning, in 1970.
Browning was to become Phoenix’s real-life husband in 1972.

April 17, 1957:

Workmen make last-minute safety checks before the opening of the new water chute ride at Belle Vue.
Cars would slowly climb a steep track before turning a corner at the summit and then plunging down into a pool surrounded by a glass viewing wall.
The water chute was dismantled and moved from Belle Vue in 1978. It was then rebuilt as the Vikingar ride at Blackpool Pleasure Beach.
