Manchester United winger George Best is brought down in a challenge from Frank Lampard Senior in the First Division match against West Ham. Looking on at Old Trafford is Hammers’ defender Billy Bonds.
Best had the last laugh, though, as he scored a hat-trick in a 4-2 victory for United. The other goal came from Bobby Charlton.
Best finished the season as United’s top scorer with 26 goals in all competitions.
United were top of the First Division at Christmas, but a poor run of form in January and February saw them drop down the table.
New manager Frank O’Farrell took swift action and signed defender Martin Buchan from Aberdeen for a club record fee of £125,000. It helped stop the decline as United eventually finished in eighth place.
