December 5, 1970:
Manchester United and Northern Ireland winger George Best takes a practice shot in the warm-up before playing Tottenham at White Hart Lane. Bobby Charlton is in the background.
The First Division encounter ended in a 2-2 draw with Best and Denis Law scoring for the Red Devils. Best finished the season as United’s top scorer with 21 goals in all competitions.
United boss Wilf McGuinness was sacked a few weeks later on December 29. Sir Matt Busby returned to the helm as caretaker manager until the appointment of Frank O’Farrell at the end of the season.
December 7, 1983:
Coronation Street actor Johnny Briggs poses for the press at the height of his character Mike Baldwin’s affair with Deirdre Barlow (Anne Kirkbride).
The love triangle between flamboyant factory owner Mike, Deirdre and her dependable husband Ken Barlow (William Roache) captured the public’s imagination and resulted in the Street’s biggest viewing figures of the decade.
When Deirdre finally chose Ken over Mike, the news was flashed up on the scoreboard during the Manchester United versus Arsenal match at Old Trafford. The message simply read Ken 1 – Mike 0!
December 8, 1991:
You should never look a gift horse in the mouth – but what about a reindeer? Santa, played by Jack Anderson of Newton Heath, pops into Chester Zoo to check on reindeer Holly.
Anderson wanted to give his steed an MOT before touring shops and garden centres in the North West with his reindeer and sleigh.
