February 12, 1954:

It may look more like a doctor’s waiting room, but this is actually the passenger lounge at Manchester’s Ringway airport in the early 1950s.

Canvas chairs line the walls and there’s no sign of the duty-free shops, retail outlets, bars and eateries that are the hallmark of modern airports.

Ringway, now Manchester airport, played an important role in aircraft production and parachute training during World War II.

It was the second busiest airport in the UK after Heathrow following the war.

February 11, 2004:

Former Coronation Street star Denise Welch poses for photographers during rehearsals for the play The Rise and Fall of Little Voice at Manchester’s Theatre Royal.

Welch played Rovers Return landlady Natalie Barnes on the long-running soap from 1997 to 2000.

She also portrayed Steph Haydock in the school drama Waterloo Road from 2006 to 2010 and was a regular panellist on the ITV chat show Loose Women.

In 2012, viewers voted Welch the winner of the ninth series of Celebrity Big Brother.

February 10, 1997:

Manchester City’s Georgi Kinkladze is pictured with the FA Cup before the Blues’ Fifth Round match against Middlesbrough at Maine Road.

Hopefully the Georgian midfielder didn’t get too attached to the trophy as City went out 0-1.

Kinkladze joined the Blues from Dinamo Tibilisi in 1995 after loan spells with Sarrbrucken and Boca Juniors.

He made 106 league appearances for City, scoring 20 goals, before leaving for Ajax in 1998.
