April 21, 1968:
Real Madrid legend Francisco Gento signs autographs at Ringway Airport as his team fly in to play Manchester United in the first leg of the European Cup semi-final.
United won the match 1-0 with a goal from George Best and then drew the away leg at the Bernabeu stadium 3-3. On the score sheet for the Red Devils that night were Bill Foulkes and David Sadler with an own goal from Zoco.
In May, United went on to become the first English team to win the European Cup by beating Benfica 4-1 after extra time at Wembley.
April 17, 1971:
Manchester United striker Denis Law fires in a shot on his way to scoring a hat-trick against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
The Red Devils won the league match 5-3 with the other two goals coming from winger George Best. The Northern Irish international was top scorer for the season with 21 goals in all competitions.
United had changed managers in December. The struggling Wilf McGuinness was replaced by his predecessor Matt Busby in a caretaker role until the appointment of Frank O’Farrell from Leicester City.
April 16, 1968:
Fallowfield actress Pat Phoenix, famous for playing Elsie Tanner on the Granada soap Coronation Street, relaxes at home with her pet dogs.
Phoenix portrayed divorcee Tanner from the first episode of the Street in December 1960 until 1984. Her character was described as being ‘feisty and bolshy, but with a good heart’.
