August 7, 1999:
Rochdale player Keith Hill does his best to stop Cheltenham Town’s Dale Watkins during the Third Division match between the two clubs at Whaddon Road.
Rochdale won 2-0 thanks to goals from Graeme Atkinson and Tony Ford and went on to finish 10th in the league under manager Steve Parkin.
The Dale also had a good run in the League Trophy (Auto Windscreens Shield), eventually reaching the area final where they were beaten 4-2 on aggregate by Second Division Stoke City.
August 8, 1971:
Manchester United winger John Aston, man of the match in the 1968 European Cup final win over Benfica, poses for the press at Old Trafford ahead of the new season.
Born in Manchester, Aston came through United’s youth academy before making his senior debut against Leicester City in 1965. He notched up 187 appearances for the Red Devils, scoring 27 goals, before joining Luton Town in 1972.
Aston also played for Mansfield Town and Blackburn Rovers before retiring from football to run a pet shop in Stalybridge.
August 5, 1992:
Olympic cycling hero Chris Boardman arrives at Manchester airport after striking gold in Barcelona. His son Edward seems fascinated by the trophy!
As well as winning the individual pursuit gold medal at Barcelona, Boardman broke the world hour record (for distance covered) three times and was awarded the MBE for services to cycling.
Boardman became Greater Manchester’s first Transport Commissioner in May this year.
