September 26, 1987:
Oldham actress Sarah Lancashire makes her first appearance on Coronation Street as Wendy Farmer, a prospective lodger of series regular Jack Duckworth (Bill Tarmey).
Lancashire returned to the Street in 1991 as would-be model Raquel Wolstenhulme, a colleague of supermarket manager Curly Watts (Kevin Kennedy). The two characters later married.
After nearly six years as Raquel, Lancashire left the Granada-produced soap in 1996. Her final scenes were watched by an audience of 20 million viewers.
One of TV’s most popular performers, Lancashire has since starred in a wide variety of programmes including Where the Heart Is, Clocking Off, Lark Rise to Candleford and Happy Valley.
September 24, 1967:
Russian cosmonaut Lieutenant Colonel Valery Bykovsky enjoys a cup of tea with the Lord Mayor of Manchester, Alderman Mrs Elizabeth Yarwood, during his visit to the city.
Bykovsky set a space endurance record when he spent five days in orbit aboard Vostok 5 in 1963.
In all, Bykovsky was in space for four days and 23 hours from June 14 to June 19.
Two days into his flight, the world’s first woman in space, Valentina Tereshkova, flew Vostok 6 within five kilometres of his spacecraft.
September 23, 1965:
Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, talks to staff at the English Sewing Cotton Company during his visit to Manchester.
Chatting to the Duke are Alan Crook, manager of the thread research department, and Helen Park, operating a thread fault machine.
Fourteen separate manufacturers came together to form the English Sewing Cotton Company in 1897. It became known as English Calico Ltd in 1968.
