March 11, 1995:
Singer-songwriter Prince is pictured on one of his four visits to Manchester from 1990 to 2002.
Here he’s performing at the G-Mex on his Ultimate Live Experience European tour. The concert featured new material to promote his new album The Gold Experience.
Prince played Maine Road in 1990 on his Nude tour and returned to the same venue in 1992 on his Diamonds and Pearls tour which took in Asia, Australia and Europe.
He was back in the city in 2002 to perform at the Manchester Apollo.
March 8, 1986:
Wigan Rugby League club go on the attack during their Challenge Cup Second Round match against St Helens at Central Park.
Wigan won the match 24-14 and then played Castleford in the Quarter Finals, again at Central Park. Unfortunately, they lost 10-2.
Castleford went on to be the eventual winners, beating Hull Kingston Rovers 15-14 in the final at Wembley stadium.
Wigan could at least take consolation from winning the John Player Special Trophy (League Cup) in 1986, beating Hull Kingston Rovers 11-8 in the final at Elland Road, Leeds.
March 3, 1952:
Manchester table tennis ace Benny Casofsky, right, lines up with Leeds player Brian Kennedy before a national competition.
Casofsky was a key member of the Manchester team that won the National Team Championship (Wilmott Cup) on three occasions. The other players were Hyman Lurie and Leslie Cohen.
A former president of the Manchester and District League, Casofsky competed for England in the 1947 World Table Tennis Championships.
