It’s a historic day for the Manchester Ship Canal as a tug boat helps the first tanker through the lock at the new oil terminal at Eastham.
Construction of the Eastham terminal, which cost £7 million to build, commenced in 1949. The aim was to provide berthing for large tankers unable to access the ship canal.
Pipelines linked the Stanlow oil refinery to the Eastham terminal and Queen Elizabeth Dock. A further oil terminal was opened at Tranmere in 1960.
